Does composite decking need treating like timber decking?

Composite decking is not your standard decking. If you’ve ever had a timber decking, you may wonder what treatments would be required for your composite decking. After all that is what you would have been accustomed to. Thankfully, you don’t need to go through the painstaking maintenance processes with composite decking. We will explore the reasons why.

Timber decking is often a hive for continual treatments that can often be time-consuming. This can include wood lice or its color readily fading due to the thin layer of protection over the decking. The latter is often handled with a woodlice killer or volatile oil as a caution and is not for the faint of heart, as they can infect your garden plants and veggies in extreme conditions.
They are often found in old wooden decks (hence the name). Another disadvantage of traditional wood decking is that it rots both inside and outside the deck, rendering it unsalvageable. To solve this issue, which usually calls for ongoing deck repair, the rotting pieces are frequently taken out and replaced. You could also use an anti-rot seal, however would you want to keep repainting every time a rot formation appeared?

Not even the best of decking cleaners would be able to undo the expense that weather has caused or other natural elements, as well as being exposed to walking/footprints and decking furniture weight. Traditional timber decks can also cause persistent weak pressure points on the deck which results in cracks and movement with exposure to wet weathers and our typical, British, ever-changing temperatures.

Composite decking maintenance

Treating composite decking is critical for extending the life and preserving the beauty of the boards. Because composite decking is made from recycled materials, it is a green option.

Due to the material composition of composite decking, you need not worry about your decking rotting. Rigorous testing procedures have been carried out on several fronts to ensure the longevity and maintenance free nature of composite decking boards. If that wasn’t enough, there’s an extra layer of capping on good quality composite decking for even more protection. Composite decking is made from;

55% wood fibre

35% high density polyethylene and

10% high quality colour pigments and bonding agents.

When composite decking is built together, the plastic inside structure unites the structure, making sure that there is little to no possibility of your deck rotting soon owing to the plastic composition, lasting you several years (rarely requiring you to utilize your warranty!). Composite decking also includes an extra 1mm layer of capping so that your vibrant colour is anti-fade and UV resistant. With just soapy water and a sponge, you can rid any of those dirt marks conveniently with your common household items, resulting in a cost-efficient solution for your decking upkeep.

This low maintenance deck option allows you to forgot your initial apprehensions of purchasing decking, when we can both agree on what is the right choice for you!
