When we’ve brought our dreams of a beautiful outside space to life with the help of composite decking, it’s normal to be cautious about how long the appearance will last.

You may have heard horror stories in the past of decking warping over time, or getting damaged when subjected to rain or hot weather.

It’s good to consider all the risks that come with any outdoor flooring so that you know you’re putting your hard-earned money to good use.

In this article, we’ll help put your mind at ease and take you through what you need to know about your outside space. If you’re wondering if composite decking warp, keep on reading…

What causes decking to warp?

The most common cause of warping is when the surface of your decking gets too hot, and as a result, starts to warp and change shape.

Hot temperatures can cause your composite decking to expand, bend and become more flexible. Then, once the temperature begins to cool down, the boards will harden and retain the bent shape which can leave your decking looking pretty unattractive.

Not only do these bent boards make for an unattractive appearance in your garden, but they can also affect the longevity and overall durability of your decking.

Does composite decking warp?

Because of the way that composite decking is manufactured, the chances of it warping like traditional decking materials are very slim.

Composite decking is a mixture of plastic and wood, so offers all the benefits of both materials in one. The plastic sleeve that covers composite decking is highly protective and prevents the risks that commonly result in warping.

This material is extremely resistant to heat. It doesn’t absorb heat like wood or plastic decking, so it doesn’t become flexible or bend over time.

But just because the chances of warping are a lot less, it doesn’t mean that you can completely avoid warping with composite decking.

When installing the decking, your fitter will know to fit each board around 3–5mm apart to give each board enough space should they start to expand in hot weather.
